Teach Us to Number Our Days

In this, the last sermon in the series, Pastor Mark points out three areas to consider in leaving a lasting legacy for family and friends. Having just come home from a visit to Boston to see four grandchildren, he is able to share from a personal perspective. Jacob's blessing on his sons sets the scene for Ephraim, the youngest, getting the blessing, and for Joseph's two sons to receive 1/6th of the land divided between the 12 tribes. Later, leadership in Israel passes from Ephraim to the tribe of Judah.

An Unexpected Grace

After Jacob wrestles with God, unmerited favor (grace) fromg God begins to show itself in unexpected ways. Jacob is able to face his fear of meeting his brother, and to humble himself, and share some restitution for what he had stolen. Esau shows the unexpected grace of God by running to the brother who stole his birthright, kissing him, embracing him and forgiving him.

Grace Along the Way

The Edge of Adventure

Jacob's faith is revitalized in Genesis 31 after 20 years where the word "God" does not cross his lips. He mentions God often in this section, and become more spiritually connected and directed as the leader of his family.

His revitalized faith also leads him into an adventure for which he was not totally prepared. However, God walks with him through it all, working behind the scenes, and providing solutions for each new problem that arises.

Jacob is a popular name, but why? His life and family are very messed up. Today, we learn the graceful truth that God is the architect of the blessed life.

  1. God can still bless us, even when we're being "clever."

  3. Those who recognize God's activity and respond in faith will eventually be rewarded.

A Fine Mess

God promised Jacob that through him, all the nations of the earth would be blessed. Sometimes we cannot discern God's presence, but just as he promised Jacob, "I am with you and will watch over you whever you go (Genesis 28:15), God still promises to work out his grand plan through our lives.
